![]() ![]() It seems like an open and shut case when it’s given to young, talented prosecutor Willy Beachum (Gosling) who is eager to leave his ninety-seven percent conviction rate earning minor paydays for the city of Los Angeles to become a climbing, wealthy attorney at an exclusive law firm where he’s offered a job. Preferring murder to Jerry Springer styled theatrics, Crawford waits until his wife returns later in the evening and puts a bullet in her brain, later confessing to the crime when Nunally comes to the house only to find his lover shot. ![]() ![]() This being said, he plays the privileged sociopaths with superiority complexes better than most actors around and such is the case in Fracture which finds Hopkins at his devious and pretentious best as structural engineer Ted Crawford who at the start of the film follows his beautiful younger wife Jennifer (Embeth Davidtz) during her extramarital tryst with police Lieutenant Robert Nunallay (Billy Burke). While that is as true as it was when he turned in his amazing Oscar nominated performance in Half Nelson, the man who may want to be careful in Fracture is Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins who has not only cornered the market on playing creepy killers but if he isn’t careful, he’s going to become typecast to the point that those roles are all that he’s offered. But if I am not it would be a good job for SBS, a public channel here in Australia, or Arte in Europe.Entertainment Weekly stated in their review of Fracture that if Ryan Gosling isn’t careful, he’s going to become a movie star. If you read this I believe you either are french/francophone or learning/practicing french as I do not believe there would be subtitles. At least to me :) Then again my personal impressions may be different than yours. And I believe the intention is that it should makes you think and it surely does that. Last, I read on this website, after viewing the entire film that, it was made by an anti-racism government organism in France. Nothing amazing with the camera work and general photography, not that you would expect so from such movies, but all my credits go to the director and production team for being able to still deliver. The script is carefully written and I like the progression of the storytelling. The kids all do a good job (not always a fan of the performance of kids) as do the main actors Anaïs Demoustier and Samy Seghir. And "Fracture" does a good job of telling a story that still surprise you with some good acting from mostly unknown actors. Many movies since the 90's have touched those subjects, with various success. The themes that it covers are nothing new for french society, suburbs, integration, violence/riots, racism, religion. I am not an expert in cinema, however I have found "Fracture" to be an entertaining experience. Now a 'telefilm', might not have the same ambitions and budget than the big productions, but it still can be a very good movie and even a masterpiece. In France this would pass almost unnoticed due to the sheer number of motion pictures released considering that it is a TV production. stumbled upon it on this famous video streaming social network and just kept watching it because it was captivating. Sometimes being an expatriated french living in an Anglo world for more than 10 years, can be an advantage in finding awesome french movies. ![]()
